Winter Solstice

It was such a joy to share this magical and meaningful celebration with our neighbors. I was so touched by the reverence the children displayed, some lighting a candle for the first time. Enchantment was had by all!

We recited this beautiful verse....

Deep Mid-Winter drawing near,
Darkness in our Garden here - -
One small flame yet bravely burns
To show a path which ever turns.
Earth, please bear us as we go,
Seeking Light to send a-glow:
Branches green and moss and fern,
Mark our path to trace each turn.
Brother animals, teach us too
To serve with patience as you do.
We walk with candle toward the Light
While Earth awaits with hope so bright:
In the Light which finds new birth

Corner of My Home - Kitchen

As Winter Solstice approaches, we have been busy slowing down. The cheerios garland is completed, as well as our beautiful finger knitted garland but there's still the popcorn and cranberry garland, dried apples, oranges...the birds are going to be happy, the tree is going to look beautiful and the house is going to smell wonderful. Perfect handwork for all that anticipation that is building up inside the children this time of year. The tree stands bare and proud and later tonight, a little Gnome will hang beautiful, sparkling lights on the tree. The girls and I are making star candle holders with the cans in the photo. We filled the cans up with water and placed them in the freezer. Tomorrow, when the cans are fully frozen we are going to design them with stars and suns by using a hammer and a nail. Once that is finished, we will place them in the sun to melt and reflect the sun's beautiful old rays. As soon as the ice has melted away they will be ready for a candle and we will place them in our new spiral. Earlier today we made our first Advent Spiral outside - it was nice to work with the earth and the gifts from nature to make something so magical...I can't wait until we light our candles and share this beautiful ritual that teaches us to embrace both the light and the darkness.

Watercolor Tuesday - Honey

Local golden honey mixed with a little lemon juice and we have just made our very first Homemade Cough Syrup. It was deliciously sweet and sour and it soothed our throats and quieted our coughs nicely. Making our own medicine was an empowering little lesson on how to help our bodies to feel better with natural ingredients.

To make your own Homemade Cough Syrup all you need is a clean jar with lid, lemons and honey. Put in as much or as little lemon juice into the honey and stir. We liked ours very lemony. I planned to store the medicine but one of the littles started double dipping and it didn't last a day before it was all gone. They really liked it!

I liked watching them feel better by their own doing. To celebrate the shorter days we put a candle in the girls room, so each night I have been reading aloud The Little House in The Big Woods in candle light. I have dreamed of nights like these, before I even had children and it was just as magical as I had imagined it to be. A huge thanks to my husband for two wonderful children.

Now off to fill the humidifiers and fix Geir's broken toe.

Martinmas 2011

We enjoyed a rescheduled Lantern Walk with our dearest friends. Geir and the girls baked homemade cinnamon pumpkin muffins - from scratch and they were delicious. Our handmade lanterns kept us busy all week .I was able to retell the story of Saint Martin by heart, a mini achievement in the Waldorf world. I also memorized The Star House. I love the eye contact that I have with the children as I tell the stories. Our lantern walk was enchanting as we embraced the dark together and shared our light with one another. I like the effort it takes to create such magical traditions such as a Martinmas Lantern Walk.

November Roses

We are under the weather from bronchitis, ear and sinus infections, and feeling just plain lousy. Being outdoors has been very healing for us and everyone's new understanding that when one of us are sick in the family the others take care of that sick person. This made the girls feel empowered and they wanted to help. It was also easier to take care of them now that they can explain how they feel - no more guessing. For me, being a sick Mom in the past has been awful, (Geir, my husband is a great nurse) but it was still like there was no such thing as Mom being sick, but this time, now that my girls are three and a half year old and six years old it was so much nicer being sick - they are so much more self propelled and sufficient. I have that feeling like we all graduated onto the next level of family life and I love it.

Watercolor Tuesday - Glorious Brown

She refers to them as "pine corns" - and do not tell her otherwise as she will tell you that "you are wrong and that you just forget," and then she will say "that is the truth."

It was enchanting to sit in the warm morning sun while they played,...away from the creek. I read for a while, had fun with my camera and took in the immense beauty that we were surrounded in.

Our hearts are heavy that our creek water is not safe.

I hope that the officials that are elected tonight will repair Cheltenham's sewer system and gain control of the storm waters.

Super Girl and The Mean Witch

Halloween means so many different things to so many different people. The celebration has always fascinated me and I never passed up the chance to dress up for the occasion. Usually I am a witch, but tonight I just wasn't feeling it, so I went for something else and I will share my last minute costume with you this coming Wednesday. Tonight, for Ella, it was all about the preparations, setting the tone, feeling the mood, and being Super Girl and having super powers. For Vivian it is all about the candy, mastering the plan to obtain it and savoring each chocolately morsel. For me, I was feeling less energetic, and needed some super powers of my own. We all have colds and a stomach thing going on but my homemade macaroni and cheese with roasted vegetables seemed to bring everyone's appetite back. It was fun night that revealed much sweetness and magic and even a little snow! I enjoyed seeing Halloween through the eyes of my children.

Act 1 - Cinderella

I have been reading the Brothers Grimm Cinderella fairytale to the girls for the last eight weeks and it has had some magical workings on my little ones. Ella is so interested in the girl with the gray frock. She is absorbed with the wonder of being the lowly one. We found a gray dress at a thrift store and she scissored up a no sew "ugly" apron. Ta-da! She even insisted on getting dirty with soot.

The girls re-enactment was not staged or deliberately set. I took the girls lead one morning when everything just seem to fall into place. Ella helped her dad build a fire, which reminded her of the apron and the gray frock ...and Viv was happy to have a silver and gold dress showered on her (from our dress up stash) or so it seemed...

...she did not think sitting pretty in a carriage was as fun as sweeping the fire place. Ella tried to convince her otherwise, but she didn't get far. I agree with Vivian - it is much more fun to act out wickedness than to be beautiful and a bit boring.

Ella showed no desire to be the pretty Cinderella either.

I suggested that Vivian could be the evil step-mother and with that she became very happy and well, evil.

She took her part very seriously and threw lentils into the ashes with promises of allowing Cinderella to the feast, that's if she picks two plates of lentils out of the ashes.

I just sat there, speechless, camera in hand and the girls word for word went about acting out the story. I am amazed that Ella can recite Cinderella's pleas, as we do not discuss the story or recite it. We simply read it over and over again, and they never tire of hearing it.

It is times like this that make me even more convinced of Waldorf education.

Vivian got to boss around her big sister, and I think she needed that outlet. So as I continue to protect the little ones from the harsh realities of our real world and maintain their dreamy state of consciousness, I love that they are exposed to the complexities of our world through fairytales.

An Autumn Walk

Africa? perhaps not. Longwood Gardens, but to Ella and Viv this is where Mary and Laura lived, on the Prairie,... of course. Due to the lack of house and barn Vivian suggested that "maybe their house got flooded." Maybe, I told her. Maybe. Ella just snickered.

every day that I wake up

It takes time to be a child, so we took a long walk through the Prairie and into the forest at Longwood Gardens. This new season brought about so many new changes, it feels nice to take a break and let it all sink in. I love how we all feel when we are outside surrounded by beauty. Everything is another year older. I feel nostalgic maybe even a little sad about not having to own a double stroller, I miss pushing my littles around, enjoying the quiet ...,and yet there is a huge part of me that is basking in the freedom of having two capable little walkers. My job is no longer to push but to keep up.

Feels wonderful to be in our backyard again, although we are treading lightly. We still do not want to eat the hens eggs yet. We will in due time, maybe after a deep freeze. Geir winterized the chickens coop tonight, we had small bonfire, and only noticed small clues from the flood.

Cheltenham Township in Pennsylvania needs to fix their 90 year old sewer system and stop polluting our creeks and homes and playgrounds. They need to manage storm water to avoid homes being destroyed or damaged by flood waters and they need a better 911 response system. I never want to go through that again and we shouldn't have to. All floods are man-made, let's hope that they can undo the damage and make it right for the residents of Cheltenham Township, and eh, I can go back to my job as a full time mother.

Handwork Thursday - Violin

Ella had her first violin recital today. I didn't take photos of her - I just wanted her to enjoy herself and for all of us to be fully present. It was a lovely experience for her Dad, sister and myself. We love Ms. Tara and we think it is really cool that she teaches us the magic of learning music. Vivian just may become a singer/song writer while Ella dreams of fiddling like Pa. Our family have all undertaken a musical instrument. I am learning to play the pan flute. It is great breath work, and a wonderful way to exhale. Geir plays guitar and is rebuilding a Telecaster under Ella and Vivian's "guidance". Homeschooling rocks!

So along with handwork, (Ella has been diligently cutting out old fashion paper dolls, and Viv is working on zippers) the girls spend time with Ms. Tara on Thursday afternoons. She comes to our home and we feel so blessed for this musical arrangement.

Friday is our Blessing day, although everyday is a blessing, the girls and I prepare the house for the weekend with Dad, (and they are really into cleaning these days as we are reading the Grimm's brother's Cinderella) we finish up or catch up on projects, try something new or just go with the flow. I like our new autumn rhythm, we are slowly moving inward, looking for warmth inside and finding peace at the end of the day with a hot cup of tea. Lately, I have been sneaking into the girls bedroom at night to watch them sleep, and it feels as though I can almost see them grow right there before my eyes. I kiss their velvety, warm, red cheeks and know that they will never be this young again. I am proud to be their Mother, and one of their teachers - it is fun growing old.

Goddess Wednesday - Six Times Around The Sun

Like Mother, like Daughter, Ella's wishes for her 6th birthday was to walk to our favorite local Chinese restaurant, eat fried rice, cookies , ice cream, drink tea, sing Happy Birthday and eat chocolate cake with all of those who love her the most on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. We had a joyful celebration.

I love you Ella. My hopes and dreams for you is to feel your self worth everyday, to radiate kindness to others and to live your life passionately.

You are my Sunshine. May all your wishes come true. (but, eh you can forget the horse).

Handwork Thursday -- Wool Insoles

Quick and easy handwork creates warm and cozy comfort for Ella and her rain boots. Being kind to others is important but no more important than being kind to yourself. It takes practice and I like practicing with Ella.

It feels good to make something special for yourself. Which puts me on the spot....I haven't handmade myself anything in awhile. I am thinking a felted Autumn fairy....

Mirrors have always fascinated me. The mirror I am standing in front of is 111 years old. It is fun to imagine what the mirror has "seen". When I look into the mirror I see a much older me, but unlike a terrible fish, I feel comfortable, it is no longer about looking hot, or professional, or motherly, it is about looking like me.

Happy Goddess Wednesday -- Celebrate yourself and embrace your beautiful reflection. Perhaps if Sylvia took on a Goddess Persona once a week she might have lived a longer and more fulfilling life. Watercolor Tuesday -- Autumn Pink

We skipped painting today and traded it in for a day at Longwood Gardens --- all four of us together. The girl in the pink was in flower heaven. It was nice to break away from our routine and spend all day surrounded by the true beauty of nature while being warmed by the tired Autumn sun. I think we are finally starting to feel rested. The flood gave us plenty of work to do and it took away with it a lot of physical and mental rubbish. I feel lighter. Looking up into the evening sky, I again saw a beautiful pink....this time I just let myself enjoy it - all to myself -leaving my camera in my bag. I felt a sad final farewell to my chapter of young motherhood. It hit me -- No more Volvo station wagon or double stroller. My little ones are growing up, and time wont stop. Looking back at the photos from our last trip here reminds me that I only have this life for a short while, and I plan to enjoy it. Home-life has been restored and a new chapter has begun. I can't wait to turn the next page.

Corner of My Home"School"

We've been quite busy lately and yet a quiet peacefulness has come to our home. Allowing us to turn inward, notice tall trees, sit by a fire, read good books, bake apple muffins and start a collection of red leaves. Autumn couldn't have come at a better time, she is gentle and somber igniting a warm and cozy school life in this and many other corners of my home.

Thank you Nicole from Frontier Dreams for your inspiration. I love reading blogs - and just this morning I finally woke up early enough to indulge in a few and sip hot earl gray tea with milk. I was equally delighted when I read your post on this Watercolor Tuesday morning. Such a lovely and appropriate poem to add to our watercolor curriculum today! The girls and I have been doing watercolor painting on Tuesdays for what seems like years. I love to hand-write poems on their finish paper and that is what I intend to do after this post, it is very calming and helps me to memorize the poems so I can magically recite them to the girls. Homeschooling ROCKS and so do all my Mama blogger friends!

So early Monday morning...and the melody played in my head all day long. There is nothing more that I love than days like today. Ticking the tock to my own clock, sharing life with with my two daughters and feeling very loved by my husband.

Sunday's Thoughts

It is still hard to imagine that the floodwater reached up past my bird feeder in our backyard. Just beyond this point the water reached 9 feet high. A lot of my thoughts are still about he flood. We do our best not to talk anymore about the flood in front of the kids, they are tired of it. We are too, it just seems hard to get past it when there are still things to do. Our heating ducts will be cleaned this week. We are slowly getting back into a happier rhythm. What happened to my neighbors and I that night wasn't an Act of God - it was negligence of the township that we live in. Clean up is just about finished, now it is time to make all the wrongs right and rest. The township hasn't heard the last of me. I believe most Activists are not happy people, I certainly did not feel happy at any of the townships meetings. They make my heart pound and my hands sweat. It is not my job to fix the flood and sewage problem - far from any calling I want to be a part of but yet on that night when it all that dirty water came dumping onto my house - it became my job. I just got to find that balance......to live a happy life and insist that the township fix the problem.

Herstory of Our Flood

On Thursday morning, September 7th, Tropical Storm Lee flooded homes in the wee hours of the morning. We awoke to our door bell ringing, our neighbor clearly in a panic, the water was chest high surrounding our homes.

Our basement filled with 42 inches of water and the perimeter of our house was between 3 feet to 9 feet of water. I did not photograph the actual flood because we were in a crisis mode.

One of our cars was completely submerged in the water, and the other filled to its dashboard. Cars were floating on the street. The smell of gas permeated the air.

The chicken coop floated away and it was found on its side with very wet chickens in it, we were surprised to find them alive. You can see the water line on the coop.

Clean up began the moment we were heard the doorbell and continues to this day.

The Mud Kitchen is closed. The soil is contaminated and we were advised from the board of health not to touch it.

This is the culvert that runs through our yard. The water level rose 9 feet, however it was the run off land water and overflowing sewers that flooded our homes from all four directions.

A bridge crossing the culvert didn't withstand the strength of the water. The water came at 3:25 in the morning and was gone (beside the basement water) by 5 AM. It was dark, scary and dreadful.

Items from our yard and neighbors yards ending up in the left hand corner of my yard which is the lowest point of the culvert. Trash was everywhere. Heavy tree stumps floated away as if they were autumn leaves.

The amount of water that traveled past our house was unimaginable. Knowing that there was nothing that I could do but watch with Ella and Geir, while Viv slept made me feel vulnerable and short of breath.

Morning time came, and I grabbed my camera and captured the heart ache.

This flood wasn't easy to get through, and yet knowing that people have lived through worst.only upsets me more. I am tired, all of us are. I am grateful for loved ones, neighbors and friends for helping us all through this mess. If this little girl's face doesn't say it all, then I don't know what does.

Corner of Our Hearts - Rebuilding Our Yard

We will rebuild! A few trees along with some bird houses fell down during the worst wind of Hurricane Irene. We began this morning painting these beautiful new bird houses and feeding stations. The little ones then turned their focus to the washed out fairy houses as Geir and I assessed and did a swoop of the yard. My heart felt heavy. After a while, we took a break and went for a ride to purchase a chain saw and a wood chipper and to grab a bite to eat.

Sadly, our yard lost its forest and now looks like a jungle. I will feel much better after we plant some pine trees in honor of the trees that we lost and fall in love all over again. Our work is all cut out for us and in the end we will have good fire wood for the winter and plenty of much needed mulch for our garden beds.

We have a lot more to do and we are very thankful that we are safe and can make things better and ah,....I can add woodcutter to my resume now.

American Indian Festival

We needed a day out of the house so we took a ride up to Allentown and attended the Roasting Ear of Corn Festival. We arrived at high noon for the opening ceremony. It was HOT.

We found a cozy spot in the shade and listened to the drums while waiting for the dancers. The music was phenomenal, it was a sound that you felt and not just heard - very meditative. Vivian wanted to be held most of the time, she is very sensitive to noise. Did I mention that it was very hot?

Walking around in the hot blazing sun wasn't ideal but there were pretty things to look at. We browsed through quickly, buying only two spirit feathers for the girls. Had I not been carrying all our water, camera bag, purse and blanket while holding a sticky, sweaty hand- I might have wanted to shop more. Vivian did not want to shop at all.

But she liked exploring, when someone wasn't carrying her.

It was soon back in the shade for us to watch a truly spirited dance.

They did this on their own, I just captured it.

Next year, we will go closer to the evening.

Setting Sail for Homeschool

It has been raining a lot here in Philadelphia. Summer is celebrating her last few weeks with hot and humid days and cool nights. Thunderstorms have been passing by all day. Inside our house feels new again as the rain chased us in for most of the day. I had a chance to finish up our homeschool curriculum for Autumn. I couldn't be more passionate about it. We are about to set sail on a fantastic exploration of our home, town and local parks.

During these cozy, rainy days, I surrounded myself with treasured books like Heaven on Earth and Donna Simmons guides and read lots of Waldorfy blogs. I am totally inspired. I feel confident and in love. Planning our days following the inhalation and exhalation of breath continues to be magical and is the key to our successful rhythm. Perhaps a curriculum is just a fancy work for having a rhythmic, meaningful and useful day in the kindy garden - either way I am having fun planning and visualizing it.

Watercolor Tuesday - Ash, Copper & Beeswax

The girls and I aren't the only ones who treasure handwork. My husband Geir renewed a beat up Fender guitar into a real beauty. We joking refer this to it as our Waldorf electric guitar. Here she is, shined with beeswax,....she plays a pretty cool sound.

I love how my husband plays, the soundscapes he creates. I love even more that the girls get to see how to build an instrument and make it their own.

I have been an acoustic girl all my life, it took this guitar to get me to like an electric guitar. Ash, copper and beeswax - simply beautiful.

Corner of My Home Home - Braids by Dad

There is something so special about brushing and braiding my childrens hair. A deep connection is made; the girls know that they have our full attention. I love this chore and what I love even more is that Dad helps out too. In fact, he makes the prettiest braids for the girls and they just adore them. Sometimes, in the evening I like to place a few drops of lavender oil in palm of my hand and rub it ever so gently on their scalp and hair - it is a pleasant experience for the both of us and the sleepy scent lingers on throughout the night invoking sweet dreams. A nice alternative to a hot, scented bath during these steamy, summer nights.

Our First Lemonade Stand - Lemonade Sisters!

Ahh success feels so, uh, tiring. I am puckered out. Yesterday the girls sold their first cup of lemonade. Today all they could talk about was how to expand. They have imagined selling apple muffins, ice cream and possibly offering a cafe. They dream big. I think we'll stick to lemonade for now. This was a wonderful event for all of us. I had to learn to step back and let Ella take charge - I was just a helper. She came up with the list of supplies, how the signs were to be designed and how much to charge. Ok so I wouldn't let her charge five dollars a cup but instead convinced her that 50 cents was fair. The logistic for me was to buy earth friendly-affordable cups, give in and buy powdered lemonade (real lemonade just wasn't in the budget) and to facilitate. We used what we had only buying the cups, pitchers, pretzels and the mix. Vivian had the responsibility to wake up from her nap and happily discover the lemonade stand --- and not fall into the trap that we did every thing without her. She jumped right on board and soon realized that she was about to have a ton of lemonade, er, I mean... fun at her and Ella's lemonade stand.

It is moments like these that I dreamed of as a child what a Mother was and how badly I wanted to be one. I am so blessed that I am living that dream - a dream defined by me. You see, I dreamt big too. Watching my daughters glow in their sweet & sour & salty moment made my heart sing and defined the true meaning of success for me.

Corner of My Home -- Before & After

This past week we celebrated our first year in our home. I can't imagine handling a move today. I feel blessed that we are settled in and feel rooted.

Moving was hard work well done.

I planned to post tonight and actually try to write something about our first year in our new home. Instead I jot down these few words because my attention keeps drifting out the window. It is too beautiful of a night out there.

Dehydration

Could it be that all my pain and fatigue came from dehydration? It is looking pretty good as I have been drinking about 4 ounces of water every half hour for the last few days and I am on my second day of being pain free. Today I googled these two words hydration and fibromyalgia and my experience was validated. Please click here to read what I found. My doctor never suggested that I may be dehydrated, a friend on facebook did! Thanks for taking the time Marc! And yes, my husband always tells me to drink water...I am sorry thatI didn't listen sooner. This totally blows my mind.

If it turns out that this wasn't my cure all I am still glad that today I am pain free and hopeful.

Corner of My Home -- Our West View

I wasn't thrilled at all about our west view when we bought our home. I hung a crystal in the window to deflect what I perceived to be sad about the house. Looking west, this is my view and I can't change it. I like to try to imagine it in its glory - in its brand newness. I guess that is how I accept it for what it is and hope that the house will see happier times again.

Today I got a good vibe from the house and I captured it in this photo.

It reached 95 degrees today. Thank goddess for air conditioners! A blessing to any house in this hot and humid weather.

I had never heard of it until I read your blog post, thanks for introducing it to me. I'm sorry to hear of the pain you are suffering due to your illness, and happy that you had some relief as well. I wonder if you have ever heard of Donna Eden? She is an energy medicine practitioner/healer/teacher that healed herself of MS. She used to be in a wheelchair and her doctors told her to get her affairs in order. Anyway, nothing like unsolicited advice/info from a stranger on the internet, but I couldn't help but think of her when I read this post. http://www.innersource.net/em/

I was taken by what she wrote because I do have Donna Eden's book!!! I bought it soon after my second child was born and I've never had the time to really read the book. This weekend I took that time and it made me feel good to realize why I bought that book, why I had the book on hand and why Constance let me know that I was ready to read it -- now.

I had read a few books from the library about Fibromyalgia earlier in the week, and they made me feel as though I should just call my whole life plans off. Big Sigh, and yes go ahead and sigh with me,.... please. Let's all let that one go.

So to say that it was refreshing to open this book would be an understatement. For now, I at least feel that I have some control over this illness and for that I am thankful.

I felt so enamored about this timely advice from Constance that I checked out her blog. She has a wonderful sense of humor! I cracked up when she described a Mayflower pole in one of her photos as an "giant acupuncture needle" - and in a sense she is kind of right - it is like that. Ok, now for the happy sigh.

Laughter and a good read - thank you Constance. Thank you for reading my blog and taking the time to give a stranger such wonder-ful unsolicited advice.

Goddess Wednesday - Water

I am in love with Deepa Mehta's movie "Water". In 2005 this triumphant movie was up for an Oscar nomination and yet I never heard of it until I stumbled upon it at the library. The music and the beautiful scenery is breathtaking and the truth that is exposed is mind boggling. It is very easy to be judgmental of other people's cultures and mores yet this movie demonstrates how hard it is for a culture to break free from old and very harmful traditions.

I can't wait to be taken in by Deepa's other two films "Heaven on Earth" and "Fire". They both look like amazing films. Click on the titles to see the trailers.

After studying Deepa Mehta's I am convinced that she is a fearless Goddess.

If you are reading this today, you'll realize that it isn't Wednesday - and that is because I would like to forget yesterday. I was in day three of grueling muscle pain and very sad about my illness and how it will and does affect my family's life. The last time I wrote about my illness I tied a little red bow around it and denied the true reality of it. It is a process of sorts. I am not yet ready to ask for help. I am not ready to admit that I can't do things myself on my bad days. Bear with me, I am trying to figure it all out.

Today is a gift. My leg pain is minimal and I slept very deep last night. I woke up feeling positive and energetic - kind of like my old self. It is a happy day and I am excited to share with you an amazing Goddess.

Water Color Tuesday - A Handmade Vase

It seems as we never have enough vases in the house to accommodate my two little flower pickers. Ella and I found inspiration in creating a vase using items that what we already have in the house.

Maybe you'll be inspired too! Here is what you'll need:

an upcycled large glass jar
dried flowers from your garden (I made a flower press from card board)
clear packing tape
twine (nice but not necessary)
fresh flowers
scissors

Now you are ready to give it a go.

Encourage your little one to smooth out the packing tape over the dried flowers and then let what ever happens happen. Creating should be joyful - for the real beauty lies in the creator - a sense of admiration of ones self is a special gift and easy to honor. Stepping back and letting the little ones do it their way is sometimes difficult for me but it has been great practice to step back and bit my tongue. In the end Ella's vase radiates love and happiness - my vase is content and perhaps a little boring.

I made my dried flower vase a few weeks back and it inspired Ella to make one just like mine. I had a packet of dried flower stickers in my desk for at least twenty years and I never knew where to stick them -- until this year.

Imitation is the best form of flattery - except when your daughter tells your husband "to get the hell down stairs, Mom needs you." Yes, I am guilty as charged. I might have said out loud that I wish he'd get the hell down here! Sorry. Perfection isn't my aim - calm and joy is really what I am after. I need to delete hell from my vocabulary to achieve that and enjoy our pretty new vases.

Now it is time to put some water and color into my vase ~~and rinse my mouth with soap.~~

Gratulerer med dagen Geir!

We celebrated my husband's birthday by taking a road trip up to New Hope - in search for a really cool hat and a good time. We drove with the windows down, our hair blowing wildly as we sat and listened to the wind. It felt so good to feel the wind and sun on our face. A quite ride in the countryside to celebrate Dad's birthday was just what we needed after a loud and fun-filled Independence Day. The girls shopped for handmade anklets and incense (to keep the mosquitoes away) and they were thrilled with their big girl purchases. However, their favorite part of the day was feeding the ducks and swans on the Delaware River with their Dad.

....and Geir found a really cool hat for his birthday.... soon I will capture a photo of him wearing it. (He didn't feel like posing tonight.)

Hopscotch Thursday - Handmade

My grandmother gave us a pretty pile of fabrics and I decided to hand stitched these cute hopscotch markers.I filled them with little shiny pebbles - they are fun and pretty and feel good to hold.

Then we set off with our chalk and I drew the hopscotch board. I learned from my past experience with this game was that I was drawing the board to big - so a small tip - make the board child sized.

We then decided on who would go first. I felt it was only fair to let Ella go first since she had two boo-boo toes.

Brilliant and fun. (motor skills, counting, waiting your turn, dexterity,... )

My next door neighbor did something very nice for me and I wanted to thank her and share some kind words. She only speaks Chinese, so I used Google Translator to write her a thank you note. When we see each other outside hanging laundry or playing with our children we do a lot of made up sign language, and we smile a lot to one another, here is just another way of sharing our life together as neighbors. Now I cross my fingers that my message was translated correctly. I hope she writes back.

Goddess Wednesday - Recharge Body, Mind & Spirit

A few weeks back I had posted that I wasn't well and I believed I was suffering from fibromyalgia. I made an appointment with this awesome and smart doctor and I was also treated by my favorite chiropractor and massage therapist. Since then, I have changed my diet and I am taking two herbal supplements; St. John's Wort and Kava-kava. I am also taking calcium and magnesium. I have been pain free for over five days now. I am able to resume yoga and garden again and walk. Woo-hoo! I have also learned what may trigger my pain and I am avoiding those triggers - no MSG for me. If I had gone to my regular doctor - she would have given me her "I don't believe fibromyalgia exists, but I can write you a pharmaceutical script." I don't care what this crippling pain is called I just want relief without harsh pain medication. I found comfort from a doctor who will treat my body, mind and spirit.

Now that I am forty, a recharge and a new doctor was exactly what I needed. Thank you all who have sent me well wishes and suggestions and a BIG thanks to Mary who introduced me to Dr. Fuller.

It is winsome to be able to touch what is beautiful. We gathered a ceramic pot with cold water, bunches of hydrangeas and played with the petals in the cool , calming water.

Nurturing our senses and taking delight in what is already there. So simple yet I have to be mindful of it or it slips by. I overheard Ella saying to her friend the other day "my Mom only likes calm things." That is mostly true. Cool water and pretty petals on a hot day is calming which made the littles such a joy to be around. Wink.

Corner of My Home - Under the Summer Solstice Sun

Everything including the lemon pie we had on hand. It was only a matter of letting the joy out and noticing the occasion. We stayed up late and celebrated our lives together ~ under the 2011 solstice sun. We enjoyed noticing the longest day of the year and each other. Taking time to notice is an art , first you have to center your self and then you have to honor what surrounds you and all your senses. It is fun to practice, and quite relaxing. Children are self centered, very attuned to nature and notice naturally. The girls were feeling so wonderful all night by their own esteem - all the stars fell into place. It was enchanting to be with them.

Goddess Wednesday - On Thursday

Yesterday I was up against major fatigue and pain in my legs. I went to bed early in hopes of feeling better today and I do even if it is just a little bit better - I'll take it. I have just about all the symptoms of fibromyalgia. I am seeing a new doctor next week. The good news is that this morning I had three glorious hours to myself. I took a long Epsom salt bath, caught up on some reading and found this beautiful video that has inspired me for the upcoming Solstice. I feel excited about all the ideas that I have in my head to celebrate this year. Simple things, like letting the little ones stay up late to catch fireflies. Eating delicious food. Being with people I love. Sitting around a bonfire singing songs in the backyard. Meditating. Resting. Helping the faeries feel welcome so that they may leave a little gift for the little ones in the morning. It has been a busy year since the last summer solstice .

My wish that I made that magical night, almost one year ago, came true.

It wasn't by intention or magic only, it was a lot of hard work. We fell in love with this home (and mud room). We have planted our roots and there is no place that we rather be. I am grateful for the journey and I now see the humor in where we lived before; a luxury condo. Puh! I suppose self humor is the best medicine!

If you haven't already thought to do it, share your wish with the universe. Write it down on a piece of paper and place it in your bonfire. (or burn by candle light outside) Watch the smoke rise above the flames, and enjoy all that is now and honor all that you hope for.

Listen More Speak Less

By nature I am a talker. I love to talk. Now I have two girls who love to talk and my husband who loves to talk, I know most people think my husband is a quiet kind of guy - but I can assure you he is not. Sometimes they all talk to me at once. So there has been some frustration in our house. Everyone has something to say to me at the same time. I try to step back and let them talk, but I realize that I am not really listening to what they are saying I was just waiting for them to finish so I could talk. I noticed this impatience of my family too. When they are asked to wait their turn they make a noise - the sound one makes when they can barely hold their words in while someone else is speaking, they look like they are about to burst all the while the only thing they can think about is what they want to say. This situation is not unique - I came from a family of talkers and I have sat in enough business meetings. Listening doesn't come naturally to me - it is an art that I am ready to learn. They may be telling me all about the wild rabbit in the backyard, but later when they need to talk but really need someone to just listen - I want to know how. I want to be approachable. I want to be in the moment with them. I want to listen more and speak less. I have a note card that I hang where I can see it everyday and it says "Close your mouth and open your heart." I feel this is the best gift that I can teach my family. I want to hear about the wild rabbit in our back yard - even if it is the thousandth time. I must remember it is a blessing to have my children and husband to share their thoughts with me.

No more um-humming them. I am listening ~~or at least trying.~~

I love Christina Perri - she is a Rock Star Goddess! Every time I listen to this ballad I feel better. I feel lighter. I feel understood. This unbelievable awesome belt-it-out from your heart song isn't about a boyfriend for me but about the man who was my procreator - and that is all he ever was. I am happy about that. I feel spared. I have a Dad - had one for as long as I can remember. I am not biologically his but that never mattered. What I am mad about, no furious about is that this man, my procreator, tried to squirm his way back into my life and cause heart ache and drama. I thought he was looking for forgiveness perhaps friendship which I was able to do. But that was not what he was after. He had no one else to share his discontented, "blame your problems on everyone else" life with. I felt tricked. I was tricked. I was schmoozed. I think all the woman in his life were and that is what makes this my perfect therapy song.

His jar of broken hearts is filled, and my heart isn't going to be one of them.

Goddess Wednesday - Tie-Dye Goddess

My neighbor invited the littles and I over today for some tie dying fun.

It truly felt like summer as the temperature reached the high nineties. Hot - very hot - it wouldn't have been the same if it wasn't hot. We were in our bathing suits, letting the creativity ~~spurt~~ flow and the sweat drip - pure summer fun. I loved it.

Vivian was so into it - she is fearless when it comes to anything messy. She was the true Tie Dye Goddess (in training of course). We gathered shirts with stains and she turned them in to pretty shirts and pajamas.

The kids had fun, taking the rubber bands off the clothes and discovering the tie dye pattern was exciting, but the best part was bonding with a new friend and that speaks to my inner Goddess. I am blessed to be able to connect with such good people just a few doors down the road.

Corner of My Home -- Butterfly Tent in Our School Room

The day before the photo was taken these chrysalises were five fuzzy little caterpillars.

We (I) took them out and cleaned off the silk then hung them up in their tent and waited. Ella is being very brave in this photo as you can tell by her face I told her to smile.

Today was the day - to our surprise! If this photo was a video you could see one of the butterflies hatch right in front of your eyes.It was thrilling.

Vivian prepared the sugar water and she thought it tasted it great. We sprinkled this sweet water on the flowers that Vivian picked from our garden . Then we added it to the butterfly tent.

These Painted Ladies are not flying yet, but perhaps they will spread their wings tonight. We will release them in our garden in a few days and we plan to purchase more caterpillars as we all found this experience to be amazing and fun.

Pure Fun with Friends

My Ella and her longtime friend spent most of their weekend together. Their happiness and love for one another makes my heart sing with joy. Ella has been walking around with such a beautiful, bright aura.

These girls Mamas were truly blessed to raise them side by side for three years. I haven't had the time to see them much since we bought our new home and it was so nice to reconnect with her - a friend who knows me well - she brought Honeysuckles for a snack!

These photos mean a lot to me. They show me how important friends are to have in life. They look so happy to be together again. I hope to nurture my friendships much better than I have been.

Goddess Wednesday - New Moon

Following the moon phases helps me put my ideas into perspective. Another chance to try again or try something new. Checking in with myself - my inner goddess - is she ok? I am ok. It took a scramble but I was able to put the hens in their coop - they put up a nice fight. I hope they learn to do it by themselves when the next new moon comes around. I have faith.

A new moon allows me to let go of thoughts of what I haven't done and instead reminds me to look forward to what I am going to do. Setting intentions is a sacred act, just as it is noticing our goddess selves. Both take energy and time, but not much time - you just have to allow it.

My intention for this new moon is to read the tower of books that I have intended to read for months - I am going to read right here in this spot after our morning hours in the sunshine. I also intend on waking up at five in the morning which means I better get to bed. I have other intentions but I can't tell you - kind of like not sharing wishes. But I can tell you that I am looking forward to establishing our summer routine - what are you looking forward to?

A Home For The Chickens

Our three chicks are loved. I have to say, for me this has been a life changing event. My husband has done an excellent job taking care of them and building them a coop. Of course he has his two little helpers to help him. Vivian and Ella have decided that they will no longer eat chicken. When asked why they said they just didn't feel good about it. I get that. I've always had a weird relationship to food. I still do. I put off watching Food Inc.for that reason then this past weekend I borrowed it from the library. Whoa. Exhale. Yikes. I have come to an understanding that I only want to feed my family happy food. I would love a book recommendation about happy food. A few years back I read Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. She took her family on an intense journey that really made perfect sense. I have a long way to go to live up to that but I do wish to devote myself to a better way of eating.

I made a delicious Earl Green Tea blended with Bergamot and Roses. It was Bliss. Today the sun was bright and hot. I gladly wore a flowy bra-less dress and a hat and enjoyed many simple pleasures of life. A glass of iced-Tea and some time to think about things like living Goddesses. Vivian and I collected flowers in the garden yesterday. It is her favorite thing to do and for me I was feeling inspired to express and share my gratitude for all the good things that my blog has brought about. I wrote this post the other day and many of you left me loving messages - it touched me. Interstingly enough, most comments are from loving souls that I have never met. I find it so intriguing that these comments leave a lasting, joyful and inspiring impression on me. Emmalina from 95 acres of sky does this time and time again. She left me this comment the other day and I was just in awe that her words made my world make sense again.

"Thanks for sharing so honestly. I think it is important that we chronicle some of the tough stuff as well as the up times, that is real life and needs to be honoured too. I hope that you are feeling ok about things, all sounds a bit sad and I feel for you. But you have created a wonderful world for you and your girls, even if someone peeks in the window it is nowhere close to the warmth of your heart and spirit. That can't be taken, only given.

Emmaline sure has a way with words. Visit her blog and you will see for yourself. I only wished she lived around the corner from me so I could invite her over for tea.

So this vase sits in a corner of my home. It is filled with gratitude and beauty that I feel towards the friendships, kind words and support that I have found here in blog land.

Duck Watching

We have a creek that runs through our backyard. We have discovered that this is the spot that our new duck friends fly up to have a snack under our bird-feeder. Of course we don't mind at all and in fact the girls would gladly offer to feed the ducks pumpernickel bread.

There has been a lot of rain these past few days. The big, beautiful blue sky showed herself today and she was magnificent. This song played through my mind all day. Ella learned how to whistle it. We all had a fabulous day - even though the whole neighborhood found out that Ella got in trouble and had to spend time inside. I do believe being five is very hard. To help mend hurt feelings, we all built a Moon-garden tee-pee together and I can't wait to share it with you.

Frugal Friday - Holly Hobbie

Holly Hobbie will be my forever sweetest childhood memory. My Uncle Bill gifted me a very large (child sized) doll of Holly Hobbie - she looked just like the picture above. I had an orange cat too. Holly was my rag-doll child and I loved wearing her blue beautiful bonnet.

I was so elated to find this book for three dollars at a consignment shop. Mint condition. I am flooded with good, innocent childhood memories - playing outside with Holly Hobbie- I must have been five. Ella is five now and Vivian is three and they love our new book. The delicate hand drawn pictures and the rich, joyful rhymes makes jumping rope and skipping in circles such a wonderful and magical time.

Thanks to these guys (I love children's publishing) a beautiful and useful book was published. I looked up Holly Hobbie at Wikipedia and it was interesting to learn how this character came to life. Clever, very clever indeed. We'll take a pass on the "new" Holly Hobbie, though.

Stretching Her Wings

Vivian has spent many afternoons watching her Big Sister in ballet class. I promised her that when she turned three she could go to ballet too. Being true to my word off she went without as much as turning back to get a reassuring kiss.

She was thrilled with the experience and exclaimed "I told you Mom, I can do it, and you didn't know that." I am so silly. It's true. She is my little bird - who likes to twirl. She gave me a kiss later - out of the blue, I knew what is was for. She is stretching her wings and I am letting her.

Goddess Wednesday - Second Cup of Tea

Our new practice of reserving a second cup of tea, for later in the morning, has been a life changing. My dear husband makes tea and coffee every morning, and he started making me a reserve tea. Hot, milky and sweet. Nectar for my Goddess self. I can take it anywhere with me. Today I had it in my garden, and later I finished it on my desk. I am loving my second cup of tea in the morning.

I find it so satisfying that by just having a little bit of warm Earl Grey tea with milk and sugar makes me so happy and calm.

For the little Goddesses in training they refreshed our offering to our Mother Goddess (a beautiful gift from my mother) with dried lavender, roses and chamomile.

The word Goddess has so many meanings to so many different people. Out of curiosity I googled the word Goddess and here are some images that I found. I really liked this one and this one! I loved looking at all the different interpretations. See for yourself. I especially this one and by the way, she isn't me, but good for her. A Goddess, is to me a woman who takes good care of her self and others and creates a nourishing, loving environment and has fun doing it. My second cup of tea helps me do just that. What helps you?

Watercolor Tuesday -- Coloring Naturally

Vivian's favorite thing to do is to pick flowers.

She studies them and wants to know the name of each one.

I am learning right along with her, I love her passion for flowers.

By the end of our walk we had a basket filled with beautiful soft petals and two tired little girls. I put them in for quiet time , made a cup of tea and set out thick watercolor paper, rounded the edges of course, and when the girls woke up we explored making colors by rubbing the petals on the paper.

It was magical. The pinks turned to purple.

Vivian was not please with this project at all. She could not understand why anybody would want to smush the flowers and ruin them - after one try she had enough. She grabbed her basket and set out to replace the flowers that we had ruined.

Ella and I on the other hand enjoyed smushing and rubbing the petals - pansies and azalea petals worked the best. The paper was colored so beautifully, so naturally and so thoughtfully- perfect for thank you notes.

I have a lot to be thankful for and today I thankful that I am able to forget about my biological father and his ability to get a glimpse of my life through my blog. He does not deserve a connection with me. We are very different people. I try not to hold onto negative energy and I do my best to avoid it. I refuse to invite suffering into my life. I hadn't expected this man to find me or my blog. He is the one who sent this. Turns out it wasn't so safe. I still have the dulcimer - I gave it to my girls. I am back to blogging and the truth is out - I took a break to figure out some weird and awful feelings about the man who donated his sperm to create me. My mother had no idea that my life was a donation. In that light, I am glad to be back sharing my love of motherhood, homeschooling and being a part of a community that I love. This post is full of joy - full of honesty. I am free to move on and enjoy MY blog.

Corner of My Home - Backyard Fun

We found two ducks in our backyard yesterday.

Vivian is being very quiet - which is very hard for her. We don't want to scare the ducks.

Ella is hoping that the ducks will want to live here - I do too.

And over in this other corner of our backyard is our new chicken coop. I never dreamed of having ducks and chickens!

Life has been joyfully busy. I have been spending precious time with my family and learning a ton. We are deep into Spring here and waking up every morning finding yet another new blooming flower to adore, smell and cherish. The gardens are heavenly. We are loving our first Spring in this wonderful home. Gah!!! I am so in love.

Ladybugs, Ladybugs....

...welcome to our home. This little nature ceremony took place tonight at dusk and the evening was beautiful. Vivian helped Ella along with the ladybugs as she has no hesitation handling them or our new chicks Nancy and Flower Girl whereas Ella is more comfortable observing. Ella and Vivian both have a love for nature yet they approach it very differently - it is interesting for me to watch. I have my own approach as well and most of our activities this Spring have been my first experience too. Homeschooling, I must say, ROCKS!

Spring this year has been like having a birthday everyday - we anticipate our walk each new morning to see what has magically appeared in our gardens. The woman who previously owned our home was a devoted and talented gardener - and we feel so blessed with what she has created. We feel very much at home ~~and tired and sore more than ever.~~ What have you been doing in your garden?

Watercolor Tuesday - Yellow

Yellow usually means slow down, but in April it means new life and full speed ahead in the gardens. It has been such a creative month for me. I taught myself needle felting! I am so in love with the process and the girls are eager recipients of my creations. I have also been working on creating a calm and peaceful space for our school room. I will soon take photos and share. I am having so much fun with the space that I created - and it is so nice not to have to clean up - we just leave our handwork and come back to it when we are ready. It is heavenly! I am still diligently reading Steiner's book "How To Know Higher Worlds". Click the link and you can read it for free. I am really fascinated with this book. Maybe you will join me?

This month started with yellow forsythias and ended with two chicks named Nancy and Flower Girl. Yes we are going to raise chickens in our backyard!

Corner of My Home - Mud Kitchen

Here is a little peek of what the girls have been up to outside in the corner of our garden. They have been making the best forsythia brownies, wild garlic meatloaf and pinecone salad that I ever did have. I was inspired by Bluebirdbaby to get to the thrift store, buy muffin pans, cake pans, spatulas and lots of bowls. I spent very little money. We had a wood plank and some bricks and ta-da Chef Vivy and Ella opened their doors. The atmosphere was pleasant and relaxing, service was top-notch but the seating...not so much - we are still working on that. The little ones have been putting in long hours, (and I have been getting a lot of gardening done!) so I can not speak enough praise about this muddy endeavor - it is so worth the investment!

I am looking for other ideas for creating a Waldorf-style outdoor play space. Please leave me link to what you have in your garden for your little ones. Earlier today we sowed some moon-flower seeds to make a Moon tepee and we added more tree stumps to our gathering spot. I also dug up some logs and reset them to be used as balance beams. As the saying goes...."you already have what you need you just have to learn how to use it."

Watercolor Tuesday - Orange

To celebrate Spring Equinox we made Orange Bird Feeders to welcome home the birds and in particular a very large Robin Mama. I had printed this orange idea out last year and it was the perfect -- go to -- since I had all the materials we needed and because I hadn't much time to prepare anything else to celebrate this special day.

It also tied nicely in with Vivian's new book The Sun Egg. A new favorite of mine. The little ones really like Elf and I could tell that they were a bit surprised of the story line. A lot of snickering went on and their curiosity was generously feed by both the storyline and illustrations. A keeper for sure.

Squeezing and tasting the fresh orange juice - simply divine.

I really loved making these this bird feeders, and so did the little ones. A perfect rainy day activity packed with Vitamin C! The process of making these spoke to all our senses and wow! - so delightful - sweet and sticky and delicious. I found that making these bird feeders was a beautiful way to express our love for all of the gifts Mother Nature is about to unfold on us. I encourage you to make one, you'll be glad you did.

Which is never the case with us. We love all weather. Happy Spring Equinox. We woke up to a steady cold rain, by the afternoon it dried up and there was a warm wind blowing, a great day for sailing. We sailed through this day very smoothly. Our hands were busy all day. We re-potted our seedlings, made a new recipe, Pumpkin Pudding - but it was a flop. I thought Vivian would love it since she loves pumpkin pie but no she did not care for it at all . She enjoyed making it and she'll make anything just to make. All day long she tells me that she wants to make something -- we've been very busy. We are felting butterflies, making thank you notes, weaving with the looms my husband made for us and gardening. I look forward to celebrating Spring and making crafts now that I have two Big Girls in the house. I also like that they are not afraid to jump in puddles and get muddy. Today has been the perfect welcome to Spring even if it was a bit wet.

Dearest Vivian, there was nothing you liked more than having three birthday desserts! You especially loved the lemon pie and we all laughed as you poked your finger in the pie hole and licked your finger while we gathered to sing Happy Birthday to you. I am so blessed that you choose me to be your Mom. May the Moon continue to delight you, may the sky continue to provide you with wonder...and may there always be a beautiful flower for you to pick. You are my sunshine.

Time In a Bottle

I am loving this song today. I am really feeling it. I love singing it.

Watching Spring arrive in my garden for the first time is like opening presents at Christmas time. We are all very excited. Vivian picked out her garden today.Ella searched high and low for the leprechauns but she never did find one. A slow and magical day after a busy week - the weather was perfect,... a balmy 72.

I've been doing a lot of what I love, and I am grateful . I have been spending most of all my free time in the garden. This morning the girls and I went on a wet adventure in Tookany creek and we just LOVE these puddle pants! Mud is our friend now. The Leprechauns left out green puddle pants for the little ones to find, minus the rainbow. I didn't get to take any photos because, well the Leprechauns are really fast....

Under the Weather

Our dear book shelf.

The only thing missing is the big brown paper bag full of dirty tissues.

I don't expect a quick recovery -- we are on day three. Vivian is enjoying her time on the couch way too much -- and for the most part I am too. We have a very rainy day here in Philadelphia and it is the perfect lazy afternoon.

Watercolor Tuesday - Green

Green is a color that gives me energy, this is true for the little ones too. Instead of painting only one wet-on-wet the girls painted six sheets of green to help make shamrock cut outs for our windows.

I am feeling renewed on this first day of March. We have tulips, Hyacinths and some new house plants that has replaced our yuletide greens...it smells good. Watering the plants is such a big deal for Vivian who will be turning three this month.

It was awesome to wear my garden shoes all day on Sunday pruning. The girls and I have been outside for hours each day. I feel the emerging energy just beneath our feet. I am excited. This is our first Spring in the new house.

Green apples are my favorite, so is this fruit basket that my older sister Ahja gifted me some years ago.

I only eat the green grapes. I'm lucky that Ella likes the purple ones.

Vivian picking the white petals from these beautiful Snowdrops, leaving behind the green stems. She never passes up an opportunity to pick a flower.

Here we are a year ago today. Growth is good.

We will see the sun 2 minutes and 35 seconds longer today. I am happy to see green, lots of green and more light.
